With degrees in both Finance and Real Estate from California State University, Northridge, Rod Menzel didn’t appear to be destined for the roofing business. However, his dream of helping people and owning his own company finally won out, and Rod traded in his successful career as a branch vice president with Great Western Bank (now Washington Mutual) to pursue an entrepreneurial path.

Construction had been in Rod’s family for generations, so becoming a Southern California / Newbury Park roofing contractor was a natural step for him. After spending a few years as an estimator while studying for his contractor’s license, Rod partnered with his wife Michelle to open their own Newbury Park roofing contractor in April 1999. Michelle’s marketing background was the perfect complement to Rod’s finance and construction experience.

“Focus on the customer has always been the company’s culture,” he says. “We are a family owned and operated business, and pride ourselves on running the company with a small business mentality – yet with large business capabilities.” After a few years in business, their company, then called Great American Roofing & Waterproofing, Inc. experienced accelerated growth with the addition of its commercial roofing business and the introduction of EnergyStar® products. The company grew to 20 employees, including dedicated financial management and customer service personnel, a rarity in the roofing field.
